FEATURED: CANCER IRL

Cancer is no longer just an older person’s disease.

In this featured Washington Post video series, the diagnosis, costs, body changes, and relationships for millennials with cancer are talked about with raw honesty and humor. Their experiences and feelings on each of these areas visualized through animation.

Striking the right tone of piece was crucial and the visuals had to balance between the humor or levity the different individuals brought to the discussion with the seriousness of their experiences. We leaned into 90’s nostalgia in our props and sometimes we mixed vintage with modern.

One video, focusing on the complicated relationship of young cancer patients with their body, leans on a hand-drawn pencil style with watercolor fill, often depicting the outer and inner renders as not always in-sync.

Scribbled notes and flourishes give a personal touch to many of the shots, just as the three individuals gave personal thoughts about their journey with cancer.

I love working on this project and appreciate the responsibility to do right by those whose stories we were visualizing, as well as others’ going through cancer.
